Who is Prophet Muhammad?

Introduction:

If you’re new to Islam, you’ve probably heard the name “Muhammad” (peace be upon him). But who was he, really? For over 1.8 billion people, he is the most beloved and influential figure in history—not just a prophet, but a perfect role model for how to live a life that pleases Allah. This simple introduction is for anyone who is curious to understand why he is so important and so deeply loved.

1. His Name and Title: What Does ‘Muhammad’ Mean?

  • His Name: Muhammad ( Arabic: مُحَمَّد )
  • The Meaning: It comes from the Arabic root word “Hamd,” which means praise. His name literally means “The Praised One” or “The One who is worthy of praise.”
  • How Muslims Honor Him: Whenever we say his name, we immediately follow it with the phrase “Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam” (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), often abbreviated as (PBUH). This is a sign of our love, respect, and reverence for him.

2. The Simple Story of His Life

His life story (called Seerah) is beautiful and inspiring. Here are the key moments:

  • Born in Makkah: He was born in the city of Makkah (in modern-day Saudi Arabia) over 1400 years ago.
  • Known as “The Trustworthy”: Even before he became a prophet, his people knew him as “Al-Amin” – the honest, the trustworthy. He was known for his impeccable character and integrity.
  • The First Revelation: At the age of 40, while meditating in a cave, the angel Gabriel (Jibreel in Arabic) appeared to him with the first words of the Quran: “Read!” This was the beginning of his prophethood.
  • The Message: For the next 23 years, Allah revealed the Quran to him. His mission was to call people to worship the One True God (Allah) and to leave the worship of idols and false gods.
  • Completion of the Message: He passed away after teaching humanity how to live by Allah’s guidance. His final words were about prayer and treating people well.

3. Why Do Muslims Love Him So Much?

Muslims don’t worship Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—we worship Allah alone. But we love him more than we love ourselves or our own families. Here’s why:

  • He Brought the Quran: He is the messenger who delivered Allah’s final guidance, the Quran, to all of humanity. This is the biggest blessing for Muslims.
  • He is Our Role Model: Allah describes him as having an “excellent character.” (Quran 68:4). He was the living example of the Quran’s teachings. He was:
    • Extremely compassionate: He was kind to children, the elderly, and even animals.
    • Incredibly patient: He endured immense hardship and persecution to deliver Allah’s message.
    • Humble and generous: He lived a simple life and always gave to those in need.
  • He Intercedes for Us: On the Day of Judgment, believers will ask Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to intercede with Allah on their behalf. This is a great hope for Muslims.
