How to Be a Muslim All Day: 5 Simple Habits to Start Today

How to Be a Muslim All Day

Becoming a Muslim isn’t just about praying five times a day; it’s about weaving the remembrance of Allah into the very fabric of your daily life. It’s about the small things you say and do from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. Here are 5 simple habits that will help you feel connected to Allah all day long

Habit 1: Start Everything with His Name (Bismillah)

The Habit: Get into the habit of saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) before you start any action.
When to do it: Before eating, drinking, starting your car, leaving your house, opening your laptop, beginning a task.
Simple Dua: Bismillah (In the name of Allah).

The Inspiration:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Any important matter that is not begun with Bismillah is devoid of Barakah (blessing).”
Starting with Allah’s name invites His blessings into your entire endeavor, no matter how small.

Habit 2: Express Gratitude Constantly (Alhamdulillah)

The Habit: Make “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for Allah) your automatic response to anything good.
When to do it: When someone asks how you are, after you eat or drink, when you see a blessing, when you finish a task.
Simple Dua: Alhamdulillah (All praise is for Allah).

The Inspiration:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “How wonderful is the case of a believer! There is good for him in everything. If prosperity comes to him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is good for him.” (Sahih Muslim)
Saying Alhamdulillah is your way of seeing and acknowledging the good in every situation.

Habit 3: Spread Peace (Assalamu Alaikum)

The Habit: Greet your Muslim brothers and sisters with the full Islamic greeting of peace.
When to do it: When you meet another Muslim, when you enter a gathering, when you come home.
The Greeting: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you).

The Inspiration:
A man asked the Prophet (pbuh): “Which aspect of Islam is best?” The Prophet replied: “Feeding the hungry and greeting with Salaam those you know and those you do not know.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This greeting is a beautiful act of charity that spreads peace and strengthens our community.

Habit 4: Seek His Forgiveness (Astaghfirullah)

The Habit: Get used to saying “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness from Allah) throughout the day.
When to do it: When you make a mistake, have a bad thought, or simply as a general practice.
Simple Dua: Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah).

The Inspiration:
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), even though he was sinless, said: “By Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
If the best of creation sought forgiveness this much, it shows us the power this habit has to purify our hearts and draw us closer to Allah.

Habit 5: Put Your Trust in Him (Insha’Allah & Masha’Allah)

The Habit: Use two powerful phrases for the future and the past.

  • Insha’Allah (If Allah wills): Say this for any future plan. “I will see you tomorrow, Insha’Allah.”
  • Masha’Allah (Whatever Allah wills): Say this when you see something beautiful or admirable. “Masha’Allah, what a beautiful child.”

The Inspiration:
Allah commands us in the Quran: “And never say of anything, ‘I will definitely do that tomorrow,’ without adding, ‘if Allah wills’ (Insha’Allah)…” (Quran 18:23-24)
Using these words is a direct implementation of Quranic guidance. It is a constant reminder of Allah’s ultimate control over all affairs and protects us from arrogance and envy.

Conclusion:

Don’t try to master all five habits at once! That can be overwhelming. Instead, choose just one to focus on for the next week. Make it a part of who you are. Once it feels natural, then add another.
